Duties

Collection Management Student Assistant

Collections Stabilization, Discovery, and Access: Under the direction of and in consultation with Collection Management staff, assists with the activities that support the stabilization, discovery, and access of LSC materials in accordance with established work plan. This includes labeling and housing in appropriate enclosures, according to established standards, and provides basic archival conservation, including preparing materials for freezing, vacuuming materials, documenting preservation issues, etc. Assists in surveying materials and creating baseline item, box, and/or folder-level descriptions for material, according to departmental guidelines and nationally accepted standards. Provides research assistance to Collection Management staff for the creation of collection description. Performs data entry and clean-up in information management systems or identified tools, such as spreadsheets. Supports Collection Management staff in determining and carrying out solutions for collections with reported container or description issues. Prepares material for onsite and offsite storage.

  11. Demonstrated ability to effectively search standard library databases such as online public access catalogs (i.e., UCLA Library Catalog), and other types of national and regional databases (i.e., WorldCat, Online Archive of California).

  12. Experience with Microsoft Office Tools, specifically Excel.

Preferred Skills
and Knowledge

  1. Ability to lift, shelve, and shift library materials weighing up to 25 pounds, and to push a fully-loaded book truck.

  2. Knowledge of standard library policies, procedures, and practices for collection use and access in the special collections area.

  3. Demonstrated experience working with information management systems.

  4. Demonstrated experience working with project management tools.

This position will be working with the Accessioning Archivist and the Acquisitions and Accessioning Assistant for Library Special Collections.
