Duties | The UCLA Media Lab provides access to the Instructional Media Collection & Services (IMCS) and the UCLA Film & Television Archive Research and Study Center (ARSC), two of the largest media collections on campus. The Media Lab Student Assistant position provides essential support in managing and maintaining media resources, equipment, and services. This position requires highly motivated and tech-savvy applicants.
Position Responsibilities: Oversee the circulation and playback of media materials within the UCLA Media Lab Setup and programming of equipment as needed to support media playback Assist clients with locating reserved materials using a relational database * Collect and verify equipment upon return and ensure proper sanitation of equipment and workspace Perform regular equipment checks to assure expected playback quality Identify equipment issues and report repair needs Provide basic training and demonstrations to help users operate media equipment confidently Troubleshoot common technical problems and guide users toward effective solutions Monitoring and enforce UCLA Media Lab and University policies to maintain a safe, productive environment.
Collaboration is essential to this role. The Media Lab Student Assistant works closely with colleagues to support daily operations and contribute to the overall success of the UCLA Media Lab.

Required Skills and Knowledge | New student employees will be trained in all areas below: Maintaining a professional presence and demeanor. Opening and closing the Media Lab, including operating the alarm system. Greeting clients and providing clear, effective customer service in person and by phone. Explaining Media Lab, IMCS, ARSC, and UCLA Library policies and ensuring client compliance. Verifying client identification and managing client records. Checking out and returning media materials using FileMaker Pro. Setting up and programming and troubleshooting media equipment and viewing stations. Circulating media materials and returning them to proper storage locations. Confirming approval status of media materials. Providing clerical support to Media Lab, IMCS, and ARSC staff. Maintaining a clean, orderly work environment and ensuring equipment and furniture are kept in good condition. Coordinating interdepartmental communication and media trafficking. Reporting equipment issues and identifying when repairs may be needed. Arriving reliably and punctually for scheduled shifts and being attentive during required work hours. Following supervisor instructions and working both independently and cooperatively with colleagues.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge | Basic knowledge/skill with Microsoft Office software, e.g. Word; Excel. Technical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot common equipment/software issues unique to the UCLA Media Lab. Basic knowledge of relational database software e.g. Filemaker Pro. Public service experience. Demonstrated interest in media or related fields.

Comments | The Media Lab Student Assistant III position is trained by the Operations Supervisor and regularly coordinates with them to establish their work schedule and availability. This is a part-time position, with flexible hours based on the student’s availability. The UCLA Media Lab provides hands-on experience with media resources and an opportunity to support the academic and creative work of students, faculty, researchers, coworkers, and visiting scholars from other institutions. This position is open to UCLA undergraduate students. Work-study is preferred for the 2026–2027 academic year. *Student workers can expect to work up to 25 hours per week during the summer, and 6 to 12 hours per week during the academic year. |
