Student Assistant I

Duties

This is the entry level position for the Student Assistant series in Access Services at the Louise M. Darling Biomedical and Science & Engineering/Boelter and Geology Libraries. Assistant I students are in a training/probationary period. During the training/probationary period Student Assistants learn the basic fundamentals of serving at the Circulation Desk, learning call numbers and performing basic stacks maintenance, assisting users with technology, and finding locations within the libraries. Tasks include the following:
-Checking in/out library materials.
-Checking in/out laptops, Chromebooks, iPads, accessories, media recording and other equipment. (equipment varies by unit).
-Providing customer service at circulation desk in person and via telephone.
-Assisting library community members and visitors with directions, resource finding, library technology and other space-oriented support.
-Assisting library community members and visitors with various resources such as the library’s catalog and webpages.
-Assisting library community members and visitors with ILL requests, SRLF requests, reserves, holds and recalls.
-Assisting with opening and closing library units.
-Assisting with collections maintenance (sorting, shelving, shelf reading, searching light cleaning, walkthroughs)
-Performing special facilities tasks as assigned and appropriately reporting facilities issues.
-Assisting UCLA Library community members and visitors with the use of library technology: scanner, copier, BruinPrint/ Wēpa, Wi-Fi, and VPN/proxy connectivity (including UCLA Health Mednet).
-Assisting staff with events, exhibits, and other equipment set-up (i.e. Stressbusters, classroom instruction sessions, etc.).

-Ability to get to work reliably and on time.
-Ability to be present in the workplace during normal working hours.

-Ability to follow directions from supervisors
-Ability to lift at least 30 lbs. and push loaded book trucks.

-Ability to uphold confidentiality in the workplace.
-Ability to work quickly and accurately under a variety of circumstances.
-Knowledgeable about UCLA Library policy and procedures and ability to enforce policy. (may be trained)
-Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and Integrated Library Systems. (may be trained)
-Ability to troubleshoot printers, public work stations and copy machines. (may be trained)
-Ability to set goals and prioritize workloads.
-Ability to serve library community members in a dynamic environment.
-Ability to proactively communicate with library community members, co-workers, supervisors, and managers.

Comments

Working summer 2026 is strongly preferred. Must be willing and able to work a minimum of 12 hours per week. Student must be able to work minimum 12 hours during 10th and Finals week. Availability to work nights and weekends a plus. Prefer to interview freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.
