Duties | Under the direction of the Database Maintenance Coordinator and with members of the Data Integrity Team, the student will assist in the completion of various projects and data-related tasks, as assigned. Initially, the student will engage in stacks checking, as well as search and retrieval activities in collections across the UCLA campus, and in basic data entry (as outlined below); later, the range of activities will be expanded with accrued experience. • Assist with special projects as assigned • Working from Excel spreadsheets and Google-docs, search library stacks for specified volumes • Record “found” and “missing” volumes and other pertinent information on spreadsheet • Coordinate with onsite staff at collection locations for the transfer of found volumes to RAMS for further processing • Report regularly with supervisor and DIT members on progress, and for feedback and further instructions • Perform basic searching/editing in the Alma client and OCLC • Print records from cataloging utility or OPAC • Provide other routine clerical assistance, as needed. |
Required Skills | • Experience using an Internet browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome • Experience using and editing Microsoft Word & Excel and/or Google-spreadsheets • Skill in matching like information and distinguishing unlike information • Ability to get to work reliably and on time • Ability to be present in the workplace during normal working hours • Ability to initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and managers • High-level attention to detail • Ability to work independently, after training, on computer-based automated library systems • Ability to work with co-workers, supervisors, and managers harmoniously and cooperatively and as a team player • Ability to follow directions from supervisors • Ability to spell and type accurately, with strong attention to detail and maintaining strict quality standards • Ability to identify and analyze problems related to job tasks • Ability to read and write in English to communicate effectively • Ability to organize and prioritize work tasks • Willingness to change projects when asked to do so • Ability to lift 25 pounds and maneuver and push loaded book trucks |
Preferred Skills | • Familiarity with academic libraries and automated library catalogs • Working knowledge of Library of Congress/National Library of Medicine call number classification systems • Skill in searching online bibliographic databases, such as UC Library ILS Alma, WorldCat, and OCLC • Reading knowledge of language(s) other than English. |
