Duties

The Modern Endangered Archives Program (MEAP) at the UCLA Library seeks a new student employee to support our work with post-custodial digital collections. We are looking for a student(s) who are available for (remote) onboarding and training during Winter Quarter (2026) and anticipate being able to work 5–10 hours per week during Spring Quarter. The starting hourly rate is $20.08. The position(s) will be fully remote.

MEAP is a granting program at the UCLA Library that funds the documentation and digitization of endangered archival materials from the 20th and 21st Centuries, including print, photographic, film, audio, ephemeral, and born digital objects. Since 2018, MEAP has funded 138 projects in 59 countries. MEAP also sustains an online, open access repository that creates access to cultural heritage materials from around the world.

We seek student employees to help support the digital lifecycle of MEAP collections at the point of publication. Daily work will focus primarily on reviewing and cleaning metadata to meet UCLA Digital Library requirements and enhance findability. Tasks might also include quality control for digital files and organizing content and digital assets. MEAP student team members might also support our efforts to amplify the reach of digital collections by documenting projects and processes, editing project content, and writing about their work for the MEAP monthly newsletter.

Training will be provided to introduce team members to specific MEAP requirements and quality control details. We are especially interested in applicants with a strong interest in the following aspects of digital libraries, including:
• Metadata and description work
• Content and Digital Asset Management Systems
• Data cross-walking and transformation

Core Functions include:

A. Quality control for digital files
A1. Quality control digital files from MEAP project teams
A2. Check digital files against standard quality control check list
A3. Make suggestions for meeting required formatting and related requirements.
A4. Renaming, reprocessing and reformatting files as needed
A5. Organizing and cleaning folders in Google Drive

B. Reviewing and cleaning metadata
B1. Quality control for metadata from MEAP project teams
B2. Check for formatting and consistency
B3. Make edits to metadata as needed
B4. Export templates
B5. Update related documentation as needed

C. Organizing content and digital assets
C1. Organizing and cleaning up folders in Google drive
C2. Renaming digital files as needed
C3. Resizing files as needed.

Required Skills
and Knowledge

  1. Ability to get to work reliably and on time.

  2. Registered UCLA graduate student

  3. Ability to initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and managers.

  4. Ability to work with co-workers, supervisors, and managers harmoniously and cooperatively and as a team player.

  5. Ability to follow directions from supervisors.

  6. Interest in digital libraries, digitization, and/or open access

  7. Experience working with (or coursework relevant to) metadata creation, refinement, remediation

  8. Excellent communication and organization skills

Preferred Skills
and Knowledge

  1. Experience working with digital images, audio or video files

  2. Graduate student in the Information Studies School or MLIS program

  3. Experience working with and refining data in spreadsheets, working with formulas, and/or using tools like OpenRefine

  4. Knowledge of controlled vocabularies and metadata schemas like Dublin Core, MODS, RDF

  5. Familiarity with Jira and/or other project management tools. [May be trained]

  6. Experience working with Photoshop, Lightroom, or other Adobe Creative Suite software. [May be trained]

Comments

We are especially interested in hiring and training assistants this Winter who are able and interested in continuing to work with MEAP through Summer and into academic year 2026–27. MEAP will begin to review applications the week of January 26, 2026
