Challenges met
Professor Shaefer directed all of his students, a total of 21 groups, to exclusively use the Lux Lab's 3D printing service. This partnership is a continuation of last year's support of the MAE162 capstone course.
MAE94 is an Introduction to Computer-Aided Design and Drafting course where students were instructed to design a solar powered car. All designs were to be printed using the Library's Lux Lab so that each team had equal access to resources.
Mostly in the latter half of November we fielded a total of 63 print requests, many of which were for several parts. We ended up using just over 4kg of material. And because of our agreement with the MAE department, we are recharging the department for these materials: a mere $250.
There were several challenges that arose while trying to meet the needs of all of these students. We've begun to implement some changes as a result, including instituting pickup windows instead of appointments and establishing a clear naming convention for requests.
