Duties

Working in the UCLA Library Preservation Studios, the Audiovisual Preservation Assistant will support workflows in the Audiovisual Preservation Studio within the Library’s Preservation unit. Under close supervision of Audiovisual Preservation staff, the AV assistant will create metadata for recently digitized and backlog collections. This position will also perform quality assurance of digitized audiovisual files, flagging any issues for review. Other duties may include photo-documentation, labeling, and collection data review for an ongoing audiovisual survey. 

(60%) METADATA CREATION - Essential 
Drawing on a combination of standards, including the FADGI guidelines for broadcast WAVE files and in-house guidelines for descriptive metadata and controlled vocabulary, the individual will: 
1. Use standardized templates to document descriptive metadata. 
2. Use specialized software and follow provided guidelines to embed technical and descriptive metadata into audiovisual files. 
3. Transcribe information from original media carriers or photo documentation of media carriers. 
4. Listen to or view audiovisual files as necessary to help describe content. 

(20%) QUALITY ASSURANCE - Essential 
The individual will review newly digitized content and: 
1. Perform quality assurance on audiovisual files utilizing tools such as QC Tools and reference materials like the Artifact Atlas. 
2. Flag any potential quality issues for review by AV Preservation Staff. 

(10%) PHOTO DOCUMENTATION - Essential 
1. Utilize a flat-bed scanner to create high resolution scans of media carriers. 
2. Use a DLSR camera to take high resolution, color-balanced images of oversized media objects. 
3. Crop and rename files using a standardized file naming procedure. 

(10%) ASSIST WITH AUDIOVISUAL SURVEY -Essential
1. Review finding aids on the Online Archive of California as necessary. 
2. Enter relevant data into an AV Survey data collection template into a collaborative spreadsheet. 
3. Highlight and document any issues with the reporting application.

Preferred Skills
and Knowledge

Working familiarity with command-line-interface, bash scripting, Python, and/or open source tools like ExifTools and FFMPEG.
Ability to use imaging equipment such as a scanner and digital camera.
Familiarity with timeline-based video editing and digital audio workstation software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Audition.
Working familiarity with operating legacy analog audiovisual playback equipment.
