Since we got the scanners, I've been actively reaching out to folks in DESMA and TFT, thinking that these scanners would be of great use to them. Kevin Williams, Prop Master for TFT, got in touch with me to discuss the possibility of scanning some actors' busts and then printing those busts to use as props on stage as fake marble statues. The scans turned out great, as did the prints, and the prop department created the bodies that they attached the heads too.

Challenges met

With this project we were enlisted to help 3D scan some actors' heads, for use as a prop in the production of Trojan Barbie. The idea was to scan the actors busts and then print them out, attaching the prints to a statue to essentially create a 'marble' statue of the actors for the stage.

The scans came out really nice, but a 1:1 print was not feasible, given the size limitations of our 3D printers.FortunatelyKevin had the resources and knowledge to trim the busts tosize,so that they would fit within our build volumes. The prints were hugely successful, and the props department did a bit of post-processing to mount the heads onto the 'statues.'

The Lux Lab (and our employees) were given proper billing on the playbill for the production. (I'm still waiting to get my hands on a copy!)

The project was so successful that Kevin and I will work towards making this recurring partnership, to help TFT students learn how to work with 3D scanning and printing technologies.
